The big news story in North Devon today is that the controversial plan for a farm of 240 wind turbines off the North Devon coast near Barnstaple has been scrapped.
‘Atlantic Array’ was going to be a massive engineering project developed by RWE npower but it has now announced it will not be proceeding due to difficulties raising the necessary finance.
As with all such developments the £3.8 billion plan was very controversial in the area. On one side were concerns about the impact on the marine environment and tourism in North Devon, and doubts over the viability of the project.
On the other side were the huge economic benefits to Barnstaple and the region resulting from the creation of 100′s of jobs, including engineering, investment and the power that would be generated.
The news is being hailed as a ‘victory for common sense’ by ’Atlantic Disarray’, a large and unusual coalition of protestors. However local MP Nick Harvey cautioned the jubilant protestors, saying the scheme could be picked up by another company in the future.
